Retaining wall types we build
Timber sleeper walls
A good-value option for garden beds, boundary fences and lower walls. Treated pine or hardwood sleepers set between steel or timber posts. Great for a natural look.
Concrete sleeper walls
Concrete sleepers with galvanised steel posts. Long-lasting, low maintenance, and they won't rot or get eaten by termites. A popular choice along boundaries on new estate blocks.
Block walls
Modular retaining blocks for curves, steps and a neat, finished look. They suit front yards, garden beds and terraced areas.
Rock and boulder walls
Stacked rock or boulder walls blend in with the bush feel of the Hills and look right at home with native planting.
Recycled railway sleeper walls
Old railway sleepers give a rustic, weathered look that suits bush and cottage gardens, especially teamed with boulders and river pebbles.

How we build a retaining wall that lasts
Most retaining walls that fail do so because of water, not the wall itself. Every wall we build is planned around:
- Site check and set-out. We look at the soil, slope, access and where the water goes, and plan the job around it.
- Excavation. Digging out and levelling the site is part of the job.
- Footings and posts set to suit the wall height and the soil.
- Drainage. Ag pipe, drainage gravel and geotextile fabric behind the wall so water has somewhere to go.
- Backfill and finish. Compacted backfill, then turf, planting, paving or garden beds to finish the job.
- Clean-up. We take away excess soil, rubbish and green waste.
Bigger jobs and acreage
On rural blocks we build retaining walls to create level pads for sheds and outdoor areas, and we can pour the concrete slab too. We recently built two sleeper retaining walls in Bunyip to create a large level pad for a machinery shed on an acreage property.

Retaining walls as part of a bigger job
A wall is often step one. Once the levels are sorted we can finish the space with:
- Drainage, including the drainage fix we did beside a sleeper wall in Rowville
- Paving, concrete slabs and stepping stones
- Natural or synthetic turf
- Planting, mulching and irrigation
- Decking See some finished jobs in our gallery.

What our customers say
FAQ
How much does a retaining wall cost? It depends on the height, length, material, site access and how much digging and drainage is needed. Timber is usually the cheapest upfront, while concrete sleepers and block cost more but last longer. We give you a written quote after a free on-site visit. For ballpark figures, see our guide to retaining wall costs in Melbourne.
How long does it take to build? It depends on the size of the wall, access and the weather. We'll give you a timeframe with your quote.
Timber or concrete sleepers — which is better? Timber is cheaper and looks natural but won't last as long, especially in damp ground. Concrete sleepers cost more but won't rot and need almost no maintenance. We'll recommend what suits your block and budget.
Can you build on a steep or hard-to-access block? Usually, yes. We'll check access when we visit and plan the job around it.
Do you take away the soil? Yes. Soil, rubbish and green-waste removal are all part of what we do.
We're often booked a month or two ahead, so it pays to get in touch early.
