Landscaping in Kallista
Kallista is surrounded by forest. Sherbrooke Forest, part of the Dandenong Ranges National Park, is right on the doorstep. Tall mountain ash shade much of the town, and the Heidelberg School painter Tom Roberts found it worth settling in. For a garden, that means deep shade, damp soil, lots of leaf litter, and slopes that rarely sit flat.

Gardens that work in shade and damp
A typical sunny-suburb garden plan won't thrive here. In Kallista we lean towards:
- Paths and steps first. Mossy timber and smooth stone get dangerous fast under the trees. We use grippy surfaces, good drainage and sensible step heights.
- Shade-loving planting. Ferns, groundcovers and understorey shrubs instead of lawn. Many locals choose indigenous plants that suit the forest edge.
- Retaining walls and terraces that suit a natural setting. Rock, timber and concrete sleeper all work. See our retaining walls.
- Decks for a dry, flat outdoor space above the damp ground.
- Drainage to deal with run-off and soggy patches.
Why we don't push lawn here
Natural turf struggles in heavy shade under big trees, and synthetic turf collects leaf litter and moss. In most Kallista gardens, mulched beds, gravel and decking give a better result for less work.
Bushfire and vegetation controls
Kallista is in the high-risk forest belt of the Dandenongs, and many properties have Bushfire Management Overlay and vegetation controls. Look up your address on VicPlan before you plan tree work or a deck, and see the CFA's "Landscaping for Bushfire" guide.

FAQ
Will a lawn grow in my shady Kallista yard? Often not well. We'll suggest options like mulched beds, gravel or a deck that suit the conditions better.
Can you build steps down a steep, wet slope? Yes. Safe steps and paths on slopes are a big part of Hills landscaping.
Do you come up to Kallista? Yes, and quotes are free.
