Landscaping in Mount Burnett
Mount Burnett is one of the smallest places on our list. It's a rural locality of fewer than 200 people, about six kilometres south of Cockatoo, and was known as Gembrook West until 1921. Stargazers know it for the Mount Burnett Observatory, and the dark skies come from the same thing that shapes landscaping here: plenty of space, not many neighbours, and a lot of hill.

Jobs that suit Mount Burnett properties
- Flat ground where you need it. Cut-and-fill pads for sheds, water tanks, carports or an outdoor area, held with a retaining wall. See our retaining walls.
- Rock and timber walls that sit naturally in a bush setting.
- Driveway retaining and drainage on long, steep entries.
- Decks for a level outdoor space close to the house.
- Easy-care gardens. Gravel paths, mulched beds and tough plants around the house, with the bush left as bush.
Keep the house surrounds simple
On a bush block, the area right around the house matters most for day-to-day living and for fire safety. Paving and gravel near the house, plants kept back from windows and decks, and clear paths are all worth building in. The CFA's free "Landscaping for Bushfire" guide explains the principles, and a VicPlan property report will show the overlays on your land.
Water off the hill
Slopes collect run-off from above. A cut-off drain or swale uphill of the house and sheds, and drainage behind every retaining wall, keeps water away from where it causes damage.
Access
Rural roads, gates and steep driveways are normal here. We'll check access when we visit and plan around it.
