Landscaping in The Patch

The Patch got its name in the 1860s from a stand of mountain ash. Big trees still define the place, along with berry-farm history and a handful of commercial nurseries. Homes here tend to be on larger, sloping blocks between Monbulk and Kallista, with bush on at least one side. A garden in The Patch needs to suit the trees, the slope and the weather.

What works on a Patch property

  • Level areas cut into the slope. A few well-built retaining walls can create a flat lawn, a veggie patch (a nod to the berry-growing days) or a spot for the kids.
  • Retaining in materials that suit the bush. Rock, recycled sleepers and timber all sit nicely against the trees. Concrete sleepers are the low-maintenance option.
  • Paths and steps linking the house, sheds and garden, built for wet and leafy conditions.
  • Drainage. In a high-rainfall area, water off the roof and down the slope needs a planned path.
  • Garden beds and mulch with plants that suit shade and cool winters.
  • Decks to create a flat, dry outdoor area close to the house.

Big trees, big responsibility

Mountain ash and other large eucalypts are part of what makes The Patch special. We plan walls, paths and excavation to avoid damaging root zones of trees you're keeping. Trees can also be protected under the planning scheme, so check before removing any. A free VicPlan property report will also show any bushfire overlays on your block.
