Garden Makeovers in Avonsleigh

Avonsleigh is a small Hills locality right next to Emerald. It took its name in 1911 from a guest house, back when Melburnians came up to the hills for summer holidays. Many homes here are well established, some with gardens that have been growing (and spreading) for decades. A lot of the work we're asked about in Avonsleigh isn't starting from scratch. It's bringing an old Hills garden back under control.

Rescuing an established Hills garden

  • Clearing and cutting back. Removing overgrown shrubs, weedy groundcovers and self-sown trees (check first whether any are protected).
  • Rebuilding the structure. Replacing rotting timber edges and old walls with timber, concrete sleeper, block or rock. See our retaining walls.
  • Fixing paths and steps. Old brick and stone paths often heave or go slippery. We rebuild them level, grippy and well drained.
  • Replanting and mulching with plants that suit the shade and the cool, wet winters.
  • Decks to replace an old timber deck or create a new flat spot to sit.

Keep what's worth keeping

Old Hills gardens often have a mature tree, an old stone wall or a rhododendron that's worth working around. We'll walk the garden with you and agree on what stays before anything comes out. Sometimes a good clear-out and a new path or wall is all an old garden needs to feel loved again.

Check your overlays

Like most of the Hills, many Avonsleigh properties have bushfire and vegetation controls. A free VicPlan property report will show what applies, and the CFA's "Landscaping for Bushfire" guide has useful ideas for replanting near the house.
