Excavation & Site Levelling in South-East Melbourne and the Hills
Most landscaping starts with getting the levels right. Before a wall, a slab, paving or a lawn goes in, the ground has to be dug out, levelled and ready.
We're Stoney Creek Landscaping, based in Upper Beaconsfield. Concreting and excavation is one of our core services. It's also the first stage of every full landscape package we build, because everything else sits on top of it.

What we dig, level and clear
Levelling yards and cut and fill on sloping blocks
On a sloping block, we cut into the high side and use that soil to build up the low side where it suits. The result is flat, usable ground for a lawn, a patio or a play area.
Shed and slab pads
We dig and level pads for sheds and outdoor areas, then pour the concrete slab. On an acreage block in Bunyip, we built sleeper retaining walls to hold a level pad for a machinery shed.
Trenches for drainage
Trenches for ag pipe, pits and stormwater connections. In Rowville, we dug a trench beside a timber sleeper wall and laid geofabric, ag pipe and scoria to fix water pooling at its base. Read about the Rowville drainage job.
Prep for paving, turf and garden beds
Digging out to the right depth, then a compacted base so paving stays flat and turf takes properly.
Soil removal
The excess soil from the dig goes with us, so you're not left with a pile in the driveway.
A recent one: levelling in Corinella
On a job in Corinella, we moved and levelled a big load of fill with a hired skid steer. It's outside our usual patch, but it's a good example of the levelling we do.
Access, machines and underground services
We'll check access when we visit and organise the right machine for the job. Tight side paths and steep Hills blocks are part of the work around here, so we plan the job around what can actually get in.
Where it's needed, we lodge a Before You Dig Australia request. Those plans mainly cover services on public land, though, and often aren't accurate inside private properties. So on your block we dig carefully around anywhere a pipe or cable is likely to run.
Excavation as part of a bigger job

Most excavation we do leads straight into the next stage: retaining walls and rock walls, paving, concrete slabs, drainage, turf and garden makeovers.
If you want the whole yard done, a full landscape package covers it from the first dig to the finished garden, all with one crew. See all our landscaping services.
Where we work
Hills and close to home: Upper Beaconsfield, Guys Hill, Beaconsfield and the Dandenong Ranges and Hills. Further out: Officer, Pakenham, Berwick and the highway towns out to Drouin and Warragul.

FAQ
Can you get a machine into a tight backyard? Often, yes. We'll check access when we visit and organise the right machine for the job.
Can you level a sloping block for a lawn? Usually, yes. Depending on the slope, it might be cut and fill or a low retaining wall to hold the level.
Do you do shed pads and slabs? Yes. We dig and level the pad and pour the concrete slab.
Do you check for underground pipes and cables? Yes. Where it's needed, we lodge a Before You Dig Australia request. Those plans mainly cover public land, so on private property we dig carefully around likely service runs.
Do I need a permit to excavate? It depends on the depth and where on the block you're digging. Check with your council. We'll flag anything we notice when we have a look.
