Rock Walls & Rock Work in the Hills and South-East Melbourne
Got a sloping block, a batter that keeps slumping after rain, or a garden that needs a more natural edge? Rock is often the answer, especially up in the Hills.
We're Stoney Creek Landscaping, based in Upper Beaconsfield. We build rock and boulder retaining walls, rock edging and rock steps on Hills blocks and new-estate yards across south-east Melbourne.
Rock work is part of our retaining walls service. It often goes into our full landscape packages too, where we plan and build the whole yard.

Rock work we do
Stacked rock and boulder retaining walls
A rock wall holds back a slope and looks like it belongs there. Rock suits bush blocks and native gardens. It works just as well on a new-estate front yard where the block steps down to the footpath.
Rock edging and garden borders
A line of rock along a garden bed keeps the soil and mulch where they should be. It also gives the lawn a clean, natural edge.

Rock steps and paths
On a slope, rock steps connect the levels and blend in with the walls around them. We can team them with paving, stepping stones or block steps.

Feature boulders and rock-and-pebble gardens
Boulders and river pebbles soften a wall and fill tricky spots where lawn won't grow. In Lysterfield and Lysterfield South, we built recycled railway sleeper walls finished with boulders and river pebbles. It's a good example of rock and timber working together.
Stone we use
Our rock comes from our supplier, Rocks Plus. Their range is all natural stone, so we can match the rock to your block and the look you're after:
- Wall rock: Coldstream walling rock, honeycomb (Colac volcanic) walling stone, mudrock walling, bluestone pitchers and sandstone blocks
- Boulders and feature rock: Coldstream rock, yellow, bronze, silver and salt-and-pepper granite, block granite, Yarra Valley Highland multicolour stone, Yarra Valley rock and Goulburn rock
- Steps: sawn honeycomb, basalt and yellow granite steps, sawn bluestone, and natural mudrock steps
- Flats, pavers and crazy paving: natural Colac flats, bluestone pavers, sawn honeycomb crazy paving, and golden brown, silver and Sangria crazy pave
- Gabion rock: Coldstream brown, silver and blasted silver granite gabion rock for filling gabion walls
- Pebbles and toppings: Buffalo pebbles, cannonballs, Tuscan aggregate, Coldstream toppings and crushed rock
We'll go through the options with you on site, and look at what suits your slope, your access and the rest of the garden.
Rock, gabion, sleepers or block: which suits your block?
- Rock and boulders look natural and suit Hills and bush blocks. They need good access for the machine and a bit more room at the base.
- Gabion walls are wire baskets packed with rock. They drain freely, suit a rural or modern look, and work well where you want a straight rock wall.
- Timber sleepers are usually the cheapest upfront, but timber won't last as long in damp ground.
- Concrete sleepers cost more but won't rot. They suit straight runs along boundaries.
- Block walls handle curves and steps and give a neat, finished look.
We'll go through the options with you on site. There's more on sleeper and block walls on our retaining walls page.
How we build a rock wall properly
- Have a look. We check the levels, drainage and access, and where the water runs when it rains.
- Dig and set out. We excavate and mark out the line of the wall.
- Base. A solid, compacted base for the first row of rock to sit on.
- Place the rock. Each rock is set leaning back into the slope, so its weight works with the wall, not against it.
- Drainage behind. Ag pipe, scoria or gravel, and geofabric go behind the rock so water has somewhere to go.
- Backfill and finish. We backfill, then finish with turf, planting or paving.
Most of the important work gets covered up. It's what's underneath that makes the difference.
Access and machines on Hills blocks
Hills blocks can be steep, narrow and full of trees. We'll check access when we visit and organise the right machine for the job. If access is tight, we'll talk you through the options before anything starts.
Where we build rock walls
Close to home in Upper Beaconsfield, Guys Hill and Beaconsfield, plus Officer, Berwick, Pakenham and across the Dandenong Ranges and Hills. We also cover Emerald, Cockatoo, Gembrook, Harkaway and Dewhurst.
Rock walls as part of a full landscape package
A rock wall is often step one. Once the levels are sorted, a full landscape package takes care of the rest. Drainage, paving, decking, turf and garden makeovers, and concreting and excavation are planned and built by one crew, in the right order. FAQ
Do rock walls need drainage? Yes. Water building up behind any wall is what pushes it over. We put ag pipe, scoria or gravel and geofabric behind the rock so the water can get away.
Can you use rock from my own block? It depends on what's there. We'll have a look and let you know whether it's usable.
What size rock do you use? It depends on the wall, the slope and the access. A wall holding back a slope needs bigger, heavier rock, while a garden edge can use smaller pieces. We can build with Coldstream, granite, honeycomb or mudrock walling stone from our rock supplier, Rocks Plus, and we'll go through the options on site.
Can you add steps or planting into a rock wall? Usually, yes. We'll work out where steps and planting fit when we have a look.
Do you take away the soil? Yes. The excess soil from the dig goes with us.
